For those unfamiliar with the famous 1976 blind tasting that has come to be known as "the Judgement of Paris", allow me to fill you in. The short version is that in a very prestigious blind tasting of Bordeaux's great chateaus, an American journalist was allowed to enter some Napa Valley wines just for fun. Well guess what... they won. This single event completely changed the course of Napa Valley, and by extension the US wine industry forever.
One of those California estates was Chateau Montelena, whose stellar Chardonnays wowed the uber palates of the all French tasting panel. So here we are 30 years later, and what happens? Chateau Montelena gets bought by a famous Bordeaux house. Kind of odd how things work out sometimes. However I will say that I am glad Cos d'Estournel got it. They have a rich history in wine making and will be a good addition to the Napa roster. I mean, let's face it, it could have been worse. I hear Microsoft is looking to diversify.....
Cheers!
