What a lovely Chardonnay! Might I recommend the mac and cheese?

Last night we held our wine pairing class for the first time. What a success! I think it really drove home the point that there are no "rules" in wine pairing any more. The age old adage of "white with fish and red with meat" has been rewritten by a new generation of chefs and sommeliers. It did make me think about some of the odd pairings I have tried in my day, some more successful than others. Say for example a lobster bisque with a sweet hungarian Tokaji Aszu? That one was a definite surpise and overwhelming success. I also relish the look on a persons face when they come in describing an intricate spicy asian dish, and instead of handing them the ultra boutique white wine they're expecting, I grab a domestic India Pale Ale from our beer cave (they thanked me later).

So now I am curious. What kind of memorable experiences have you had with food and wine? Success? Disaster? Mystery? Betrayal? Inquiring minds want to know!
