Looking Back on 2008

by Administrator 3. January 2009 08:47

2008 . . . what an eventful year for the wine industry. So much change took place it's difficult to summarize it all. Arguably the top story in 2008 was the passing of one of the wine world's great icons, Robert Mondavi. There is no other name more recognized in California wine, and his contributions to the domestic wine industry are almost immeasurable.  Although the Mondavi dynasty saw a demise so dramatic as to warrant a Shakespearian adaptation, his legacy will live for generations to come. Unfortunately the Napa Valley educational center "Copia" (a partnership between Mondavi and several educational institutions) will not be one of them, as it was forced to permanently close its doors in late November due to increasing financial troubles.

Speaking of California, a lot of brands changed hands this year. Long time family owned Sonoma winery Sebastiani was sold to Foley Wine Group, while Zinfandel magnate Ken Rosenblum saw his winery sold to beverage industry behemoth Diageo. Another Bordeaux house joined the California roster when Cos D'Estournel purchased Chateau Montelena, which I think will actually be good for the once great house, as it is desperately in need of some attention. There were several other acquisitions, but I think you get the idea.

As far as the 2008 vintage, here are some preliminary thoughts:

California, Napa ValleyAbout average. Nothing to write home about, but may produce a surprise or two.

California, Sonoma: Average. Low yields, but look for some good Sauv Blancs.

Oregon: Good. Low yields as well. Smaller berries produced concentrated wines and more tannin in the Pinot Noir.

Washington: Average - Above Average. Not as much body, but the good producers will get some nice juice.

Bordeaux: Below Average. Hold on to your '05s. 2008 will be a value year for first growths.

White Burgundy: Average - Below Average.  Rough year overall. May produce some interesting Chablis though.

Red Burgundy: Below Average. Uneven developement and ripening led to winemakers scrambling to readjust vinification. Yields down 50% in some parcels due to hail. Not a good year.

Alsace: Good. Very low yields in 2008, but a wonderful vintage. Look for some stellar wines.

Rhone: Average - Below Average. Lower bodied wines, thinner fruit. Look for some sleeper hits in northern rhone however.

Germany: Above Average. Going to be very nice. Look for some STELLAR Eiswein!!

Italy (Overall): Above Average. What started out as a "Oh No" vintage, turned out to be a nice surprise. Will produce some medium bodied but well structured reds.

Spain: Above Average. Going to get some good depth in your riojas. Not the 2004 vintage, but a successful year.
