I just recently found out that I am hosting Christmas this year with my brother-in-law and his family. Anyone who knows me knows the panicked look on my face when I found out. That look is still there. It would not be Christmas without them so please don’t misunderstand. I always look forward to this holiday but we usually celebrate at their house. Again, those who know me know my life is a little crazy at this time of year (ok, crazier than the normal is probably a better phrase). My work here at Vine & Table and Kahn’s Catering during the holiday season is a one-way ticket to Stress-ville for me. Throw in a little soiree at my house and you have a recipe for…well, I don’t know what but it probably isn’t good.
A little insight to me: My house is never as neat as I would like it, and I never seem to have enough time to decorate and organize and do all of the things Martha Stewart says I should do. Now, I do have a husband, two kids and two dogs who could help. The hubby and kids do help, and that’s a good thing. The two dogs, well, that’s a story for another day. Not only am I super busy at work during December but I find that everything speeds up during this silly time. Both of the kids’ schools go crazy during December-holiday band concerts, tons of homework and projects, just to name a few. My husband has a day job and then plays music at night so he has private parties during December-never home. Are you getting the picture of the chaos surrounding me at this time? Do you see my head starting to spin off?
Anyway, as I sit here at my desk working on a tedious print job, I am making a mental to-do list of things to accomplish before the family arrives. For starters, I need to find the ornaments so I can put them on the tree. I did get a new tree last week, which is pre-lit. Woo-hoo! This is a definite time saver. Wait a minute, I am feeling better already…
In the end, I know it will all come together somehow, and I realize the most important thing is to be with family. I will work hard to get everything ready, and I will strive to keep in mind that they already know what kind of a nut I am this month. We always have a great time together, and it is always fun to see my kids re-connect with their cousins. We catch up on life and watch our husbands behave like they were little kids again. I guess that is what brothers do.
I hope you are able to spend time with your family this holiday season. I would love to hear your preparation plans for the holiday soiree you might be hosting.
Just remember: Life’s too short. Don’t worry about the little things like I do (dust bunnies count as little, you know)…you’ll give yourself an ulcer and miss all the fun!
Lori
