Spirits Green Wave

by Denis Lynch 10. April 2010 04:03

Certified Organic Single Malts...

So what is all this fuss about Organic and Green anyway? Well let me tell you this, organic and being eco-friendly are not new things. It is just that as we have become more industrialized, we as a race have become rather greedy in our effort to make a profit. However there is a growing momentum by people to move forward in industry and embrace old as well as new techniques that both improves the bottom line as well as our environment.

One Scottish Island has embraced the Green with a project that will soon make it the first community within the U.K. to be self-sufficient from renewable energy. The island of Islay on Scotland’s windswept west coast is going to produce energy from whisky! Well actually, energy will be created from waste that is produced as a result of the whisky making process along with 10 underwater turbines. Bruichladdich (Brook-laddie) is one of the distilleries at the forefront of this Green Wave. They have just launched a single malt that is produced in the traditional way using organic barley from Inverness. I had the pleasure in tasting this whisky recently and was extremely impressed. It is fresh with a nice light pear/apple nose with a big creamy mouth feel. This is Bruichladdich at it’s best. - Denis
