When I think of Zinfandel, I think of Dry Creek Valley in Sonoma. The Zinfandels in Dry Creek Valley have a lovely minerality to balance the intense fruit forwardness. Seghesio Family Vineyard makes an exceptional Zin and the 2008 Sonoma County Zinfandel is one of my favorites! With a blend of 89% Zinfandel, 8% Petit Syrah and 3% Syrah, this wine offers flavors of blackberry, raspberry, and mocha with a lush, velvety feel to it and fine tannins to create structure and richness.
We enjoyed this wine over the weekend with a charcoal-grilled, New York Strip Steak marinated in blackstrap molasses, Worchestershire sauce, salt and pepper and served with sautéed red peppers, portabella mushrooms, eggplant, red onion, lemon and garlic. The wine also pairs well with barbeque, pasta with red sauce, pizza and other structured, spicy dishes. With the cool fall weather coming in, fire up that grill and open a bottle (or two) to enjoy!
