Puydeval 2009
Medium Bodied - Mulberry, walnut oil, beet root, and fennel.
A wine of simple name but offering myriad virtues, 2008 Puydeval comes from Cabernet Franc with 30% Syrah and 10% Merlot, grown near Carcassonne, and conceived and executed by ambitious oenologist-negociant Jeff Carrell. With a nose of mulberry, walnut oil, beet root, and fennel and a soft, satisfyingly mouth-filling, subtly bitter palate, I might have guessed this to be a 2003 Loire red. Only a slight hint of dryness in the finish (perhaps a legacy of older barriques, or of the vintage) keeps me from endorsing it even more enthusiastically, but it should prove versatile and enjoyable for at least the next year.
