Running from south of Lyon to the Mediterranean sea, the Rhone River Valley is home to one of the most diverse wine regions in France. Divided into two sub-regions, the Northern Rhone produces red wines mainly from the Syrah and grape and white wines from Viognier grapes; and the Southern Rhone, which is known for an array of red, white and rosé wine often blending several grape varietals. Wines from the Rhone can achieve outstanding quality and some of the best known wines to come from this region are Chateauneuf du Pape, Cotes du Rhone, Cote Rotie, Hermitage and Gigondas.
